Bears Get Close to Jefferson Day Fishing Contest

A mama and four cubs visited the pond while the contest was in progress Saturday.

Even the bears participated in on Saturday.

During the fishing contest at the Weldon Educational Pond, several contestants were trying to catch the biggest fish, when they received a visit from a mama bear and four cubs.

The Jefferson Township Police were able to chase the bear family back into the woods.

“We were concerned about the amount of people there, especially with all the food that was around, too,” Officer Tom Fedo said. “We knew the mom would be looking for food for the kids, and we didn’t want to take any chances.”
