High School Carnival Helps Disabled Adults

Department for Persons With Disabilities gets $1,000, $5,000 more possible.

Students from ’s DECA (Distributive Education Club of America) and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) classes did many good deeds on Saturday. Not only did they provide a lot of fun for a lot of young kids, but they helped out the with a carnival in the high school gym.

The DECA class applied for a program sponsored by MSG Varsity, part of Cablevision. The class had to submit a marketing plan for a program to help a charity, according to DECA teacher Melissa Kwiecinski.

“Once Cablevision approved our marketing plan, we received $500 in seed money to spend on our fundraiser, which we used to buy all the prizes and items for the carnival games,” she said. “In addition, the DPD got a $1,000 donation.”

The students are also involved in a competition with five other schools involving their marketing plan and their charity. If they win, the DPD will get an additional $5,000.

“We’ve been told we have a pretty good chance, because we didn’t just do a fundraiser. We have a relationship with our charity,” Kwiecinski said.

Chris Brancato, the DPD’s director of development and public relations, agreed.

“The DECA and FBLA students have done so much for us,” Brancato said. “They visit with the residents, and help us out whenever we ask them for anything.”

The school will find out later this week if they won the competition. In the meantime, the carnival appeared to be a success, with kids young and old enjoying the games and picking out prizes.
