PHOTOS: Irene Leaves Disaster in Her Wake
Jefferson Township took a beating from Hurricane Irene.
Residents all over town can't wait to say "good night, Irene." The storm tried the patients of the people of Jefferson, with downed trees and power lines, closed roads, broken dams and flooding.
The dam at Saffin's Pond gave way, sending a surge of water into Lake Shawnee and forcing the evacuation of lakefront property owners in Lake Shawnee. However, the evacuation was short-lived, as homeowners were allowed back into their homes within about two hours.
Parts of Route 15 North and South have been closed due to flooding at Cedar Terrace. Jefferson Police Sgt. Paul Castimore said he expects that the highway will remain closed into Monday morning's rush hour.
Many other streets throughout town were closed for most of Sunday due to downed trees and power lines.
Conditions were difficult throughout Morris County on Saturday and Sunday. County officials expect that some county offices will be closed on Monday.
