Left-Turn Lane May Give Relief on Berkshire Valley Rd.
Proposal involves two left-turn lanes onto Route 15 South.
Drivers leaving Oak Ridge for Route 15 South may finally get some relief from the morning rush hour traffic problem with the possible addition of a second left-turn lane. However, it could cause drivers coming in the opposite direction more time.
Jefferson Township business administrator James Leach spoke to state Department of Transportation (DOT) representatives when they attended a recent meeting regarding another matter.
“I got them to agree to revisit the situation at 15 and Berkshire Valley Road,” Leach said.
The configuration currently allows only one lane to make the left from Berkshire Valley Road west to Route 15 South. The proposed new configuration would allow for drivers in the right lane to also turn left onto the highway.
However, under the proposed plan, Leach said, drivers would no longer be allowed to cross Route 15 going east on Berkshire Valley Road toward Oak Ridge, or turn left onto Route 15 North. Instead, they would have to go right onto Route 15 South, make a U-turn at Phipps Road and come back north on Route 15.
“It’s a case of solving one problem and creating another, but we have to do something about that intersection with people going onto 15 South,” Jefferson Township Mayor Russell Felter said. “The traffic gets backed up way too far in the morning.”
Leach must present the DOT with a Problem Statement regarding the intersection, which the council authorized him to do through a resolution at Wednesday night's meeting.
What do you think of the proposed plan for the intersection of Route 15 and Berkshire Valley Road? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

They can try to make the red light on Berkshire Valley Road not be as long as it is. Hopefully keep the traffic flowing better that way.

Just give the cars in the right lane the option of going straight or turning left. Paint the roadway to keep cars in their proper lanes. and install a sign on the right indicating the traffgic flow. It can be done for minimal ,costs and still allow the cars to go east on B.V. Rd.

Something way over due.. That intersection needs 2 left turn lanes and people need to step on the gas a little more and move when the light turns green. 18 years and finally someone is looking at this problem. Now lets see how long it takes to implement a plan and then move forward. Tax dollars are due on specific dates, changes take forever to be done... WHY???? Get moving Jefferson. So much potential in this town and nothing gets done.

Although there is less traffic going west BVR to North 15, it is rare at just about any hour to get through the intersection in less then 2 light sequences, Sometimes 3-4 are required!

I agree with tom. Vehicles coming from the other direction on BVR turning left onto 15 north need a green arrow light. They have no time to make that turn and its causing accidents there.

i like that idea.

I understand everyone's frustration. Just to clarify, though, since Route 15 is a state highway, Jefferson cannot make any changes. Anything that is done must be done by the state.

Get rid of the light altogether, only allow Berkshire traffic to merge North or South and use the U-turn at the Exxon to go from 15N to 15S and create another U-turn from 15S to 15N in the median somewhere after the Lukoil Gas station and well before the Picatinny light.

This is the dumbest idea I have ever heard, take the entire intersection and make it only useful to go across the highway in one direction…. Really is that the best people could come up with? Maybe if they could ever time the lights correctly there wouldn’t be such a big problem. There are times when you can be the second car in line and still get stuck in between the highway because the lights have no consistency and change in a split second.

I completely agree; especially as someone who gets stuck at a least two maybe even three lights every night coming home just going across Route 15.

This is a horrible suggestion as to how to fix this problem. Time the lights better to allow more cars to go west on BV Rd AND ALL THE WAY ACROSS to get onto 15 South before it turns red. There is never enough time to get across both so it backs up so much.

Are you kidding me.... This is just insane... you will not be able to go straight across Berkshire Valley or make a left to go up 15 N....Soooo Now you will make yet another intersection (Phipps Rd) VERY dangerous too and it will put much more traffic on 15 South...That is if you can even merge on 15 South with all the people flying up the right lane as it is...Now you will be using more gas too... JUST A REALLY BAD IDEA....... THE NJDOT BETTER LOOK AT THIS AGAIN....

I think the DOT needs to adjust the timing of the lights and definetly install delayed green arrow lights to ease entery onto RT.15 in both directions. Traffic should be able to cross and travel northbound without going down 15S to make a U turn. In addition, turning the right lane into a second left turn or straight option lane would ease the back up of traffic during rush hours to decrease the conjestion and long wait times to enter Rt.15.

What about all of the people buying gas going 15 north? How are they going to get back on 15 north? They come out onto BVR and turn left back onto 15North.
The better option would be to make the current right lane also a left turn lane just like Echo Lake Road on 23 from West Milford.

Allowing both lanes to turn left onto 15 South is a great first step. But you would also want to widen BVal road as it approaches 15 to allow for smoother traffic flow both to cross 15 north on the way to 15 south but to provide access to 15 north for those going that way. The idea of turning from both lanes works great on the other end of BVal road at 23 in West Milford. Do the same in Jefferson.

Sue - I thought they were just going to eliminate the left turn onto Route 15 North, but still allow traffic to cross through down Berkshire Valley.

John, according to my notes, they would eliminate both the left onto 15 North and the lane going straight across 15.

This is the best plan they could come up with? This plan makes no sense.

So now you will have those needing to go west on bvr and north 15 go onto south 15 first? Do they know how 15 south backs up in the morning? Now you will have more cars going that way. And Phipps road will be completely jammed with Picatinny folks and those trying to make the U turn. Dumb idea.

ADD AN ADDITIONAL LANE: TWO LANES FOR THE LEFT HAND TURN ONTO ROUTE 15 SOUTH AND ONE LANE TO GO WEST ONTO BSV ROAD.
