POLL: Was the Diaz-Bridges Sentence Fair?

Everyone has opinions. Patch is the place to share them.

Demetrius Diaz-Bridges was sentenced last week to 40 years in prison for the murder of Elizabeth O’Brien in her home. He must serve 85 percent of the sentence, or 34 years, before being eligible for parole.

Diaz-Bridges murdered O’Brien in January 2008 after the two allegedly fought over the fact that O’Brien wanted drugs and Diaz-Bridges was unable to provide them for her. He hit her several times with a dumbbell, ultimately killing her.

I will never believe the "alleged fact" about drugs. Makes a heck of a lot more sense that he was trying to rob her when the confrontation occured. The Beth I knew was not a druggie. Nothing "fair" here.

I don't believe she asked for drugs either. It sounds like a smear to make jury members think she was "mixed up" in drugs or something. Even if she asked him for weed it doesn't make sense. How does that translate to a motive of beating someone to death?

Exactly...even an argument, no matter what it was about, shouldn't lead to anyone's death. He's just a selfish punk with no regard for human life other than his own. I don't believe he is sorry either. He actually had the nerve to ask for the family's forgiveness...yeah, right....he doesn't deserve it! I hope he is not granted parole when the time comes.

He gets 40 years, and her children suffer for the rest of their lives. Doesn't sound fair to me.

i think its unfair for all parties included, hers and her family and his and his family. i am not sure of all the exact things, like none of us can be, of what happened that day but i DO NOT think that he woke up that day thinking i will kill this woman like she didnt wake up thinking i will die today. i do not feel it is fair to take a life for a life because there are other circimstances involed. for instance he has kids, his children will grow up without a parent too not judt hers. it may not be logical to most to think that he should have the right to be a father after this however it is not up to us judge, its up to God, his kids should not be punished they had nothing to do with that. im sure that her children who now have no mom anymore will agree that is not right to not have a parent. its not just but it is not right on any child. no matter what his punishment is she will never come back, he is a young man who had the oppertunity to change is life and is now robbed of that. i was there in the court, and it was not fair. the only side heard was of the victims family. the defendants family had no right to say anything. it is not fair a woman was killed and it is not fair that her loved ones will have to miss her and live their changed lives in a manor that they wouldnt have normally done and i feel for them with my deepest sympathy and empathy. i do not wish that on anyone. i do not also feel its fair to him from his family,

people are selfish not wanting to give forgiveness yet go to church and pray to a jesus they dont follow with their whole heart, forgiveness is not something we do for other people we do it for ourselves. they are only hurting themselves. ms. obrian was forgiving and how dare her family not be.

Who is anyone to say if and when someone should forgive? That thing doesn't deserve anything. And who is anyone kidding he wouldn't have been in his child's life anyway but people can keep sticking up for a murderer and then try to claim god like good people its cool

I think that he was a young guy and had his whole life ahead of him no one wants to loose a mother like that I did and I learned to forgive her killer (my dad) not for him but for my self yes it hurts but I'm older now and I moved on from it now he's gonna be in prison yes which he needs to be but who are we to judge no one now he has to live with this for the rest of his life wen he's released he will be 54 years old so he would of had time to think I pray for both families because at the end of the day there hurting in both parts not us think about it and could it be he had a problem no one really knows his situation so all I'm saying us don't judge!!!
