Saint Clare’s Foundation held its eleventh annual Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, which supported breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at Saint Clare’s Health System. The 5K (3 mile) event, which was held on Sunday, September 23 near the JCPenney at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall, raised more than $100,500 and drew a crowd of more than 1,700 participants, including 84 teams and more than 100 breast cancer survivors. Additionally, this year’s successful event brought the total amount raised over the last 11 years to more than $1,000,000 raised to support the latest technology to assist in early detection and treatment of breast cancer for women in the community.
The event was organized by volunteer Walk Committee which was led by Co-Chairs Karen Bott-Kelly and Nancy McKinley, Station Manager WMTR/WDHA. “While breast cancer awareness has a national presence, the Saint Clare’s Walk provides a local charity that area woman can identify with,” said McKinley. “WMTR/WDHA’s sponsorship is part of the mission of community service.”
“We are pleased that we can honor so many breast cancer survivors at the Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, president and chief executive officer at Saint Clare’s Health System. “Through the funds raised for this event, we hope even more of the public will become knowledgeable about breast cancer so we can continue to create a healthier community in the area we serve.”
Additionally, Donita Judge received special recognition by receiving this year’s Mary Mulholland Spirit Award for outstanding leadership and support of Saint Clare’s Health System. Judge explained that the great benefit of the Walk is that it reminds the public that “we must act, not react” in order to combat the disease. “Early diagnosis and treatment are critical,” Judge said.
The eleventh annual event was sponsored by Title Sponsor ADD Systems, Presenting Sponsors Kindred Hospital New Jersey – Morris County and TD Bank, Media Sponsor WMTR/WDHA, and Hilton Garden Inn in Rockaway, Rockaway Township, and Rockaway Townsquare Mall. Additional special recognition to Johnson & Johnson (John and Megan Gorman), Ralph Rood Events and Schroth’s Jewelers (Sue and Win Schroth).
