Pit bulls have also saved children and people. Gah, hate all this hatred. The key is the owners.Read More Animals are not people, as much as you love them. I can post articles where a lab ate an 18 month child's dangling feet when the owner forgot to feed it for a few days. Insurance companies charge more for 10 dogs, Rotties (the dog I personally am more afraid of because they can change because of their skull pressure when they get older), dalmations, collies, etc. The dog I have now was listed as unadoptable because she was vicious. When I got her home it took me very little time to figure out she is not vicious, just frightened. I was told she was a biter - Not sure how it can be because she has a soft mouth, she likes to mouth things, but never bites down. I had to get her soft food, does not like to bite. When she kills mice (she is a micer) she breaks their neck by shaking them, never ever bites down. I was told she hates men and would attack them, tell that to the post man who loves playing with her when he delivers mail. Every dog is an animal, I will never get a hamster because it would be a big rat to her, but I am not afraid to have children about her because she doesn't care it they poke her or hit her, she just lets them do what ever they want to her and then will chase them to kiss them. If anyone is to blame for those things reported on, it is the owners, who lets their dogs run around unsupervised.

"The bullcrap about a Pit Bulls jaw locking...." I feel so much better, their jaws don'tRead More lock but they can still rip me to shreds or kill me. But oh wait, if they kill me, it's my fault because I don't know how to read or interpret dog psychology. I guess that poor grandmother deserved what she got because she caused the dog to attack her in her own backyard while she was minding her own business? Did I get all the pro dog talking points correct?

#Gus Sotirakis. The Nanny Dog propaganda you printed is a myth and confirmed via BAD RAP (a pitRead More bull advocacy group) just last May. Here is their facebook posting: https://www.facebook.com/BADRAP.org/posts/10151460774472399 BTW, why would a Nanny Dog attack children so often.....I know, I know. They did something to warrant it. I wouldn't call that a suitable family pet, by any standards. Stop reading the Pit Bull bible to us. It just doesn't fly anymore.
Gus Sotirakis April 17, 2014 at 02:12 pm
Tribble by your logic about Pit Bulls you must think minorities are bad. Our prisons are filled withRead More minorities therefore if you're a minority you must have a propensity to violence or to burglarize. That is the mentality of the Pit hater. Take a look at some of the even Michael Vick surviving dogs that were rehabbed. Mel who was rehabbed and moved to Texas with his new owner was even given a key to the city. Here are some results of temperment tests given to various breeds. The test looked for good temperaments in dogs. Lab Retriever 92.4% Amer Pit Bull Terrier 86.4% Golden Ret 84.9% Yorkie 82.5% Beagle 80% Shih Tzu 78% Bichon Frise 76.7% Yes the APBT was #2 on the list 2nd only to the Lab. 123 Breeds were tested. There are 4-6 million Pit Bulls in the United States. That is a low estimate. 99.9% of them never hurt a person. Furthermore: No single, neutered household pet Pit Bull has ever killed anyone. What I'm saying is dogs are individuals. Pit Bulls are a popular breed and owners need to be responsible. Persons aged 20-24 commit the most homicides, again by your put them all in one box thinking, lets just put anyone that age in prison. That'll save a lot more lives than a ban on Pit Bulls. That's what you "ban the Pit Bulls" logic looks like to us. Keep your dirty laws off my Pit Bulls. I'll defend my Pit Bulls if I have to with my guns.

Agreed but the problem we are running into here is at the end of the tragedy, you are told the dogRead More belongs to the child (usually a teenager) and the parents refuse to take any responsibility at all. Even to the extent of telling authorities themselves to put the dog down. It's disgusting the measures some take to avoid responsibility and get away with it! You are correct the laws are there for the law abiding citizens, the rest couldn't careless.
Jack Baillargeron April 16, 2014 at 04:57 pm
Doesn't matter, If the teen lives in the home or one the parents property they are responsible.Read More Their home owners insurance company can be sued as well. Putting the dog down does not negate the incident. It is like destroying the knife used to stab somebody. The stabber is still responsible. I am not a lawyer or anything like that but read enough cases and know enough victims as a Retired firefighter to know you can win on these things easily. Might not be able to get money from some of these people but you can get them banned from being able to own an animal again at the least in my opinion.
Jack Baillargeron April 16, 2014 at 05:05 pm
Would point out also that is the reason for getting leash law or town ordinances. They merely stateRead More the rule and have no age limitation. I have seen children walking a 40lb dog as young as 8 to 10. There is no way they could control that dog unless the dog has been very well trained along with the child being trained so the dog will obey it. Problem with society right now is that no one takes self-responsibility for their own action anymore (well any criminal activity or incidents like this). Idiot owners like to blame the dog also to negate their responsibility. Start throwing them in jail with sentences they would give to a person for doing what the dog does and you would have deterent. But there will always be some excuse. It sickens me to no end.

Boss Hog I see you changed your subtitle from "telling the whole story" to "helpingRead More people make decisions". Was that because I pointed out the FACT that you were NOT sharing the "whole story"? Let me point out something else, your NOT helping anyone with you simpleton approach to a Blog. I get it, you don't like certain dogs. It's your choice and your opinion. Your NON blog is just a collection of stories written by someone else and pictures that have nothing to do with the stories you recycle. It it exactly this biased reporting of a collection of horror stories about people being attacked that creates a fear of these dogs. Not all bully breed dogs are evil and bad. I feel bad for the people injured. It's terrible. But you neglect to tell the OTHERSIDE of the bully breeds. I personally know many pitbull type dogs that do good things but unfortunately we live in a drama addicted society so happy stories don't sell. you are in no way helping anyone. Try actually writing more than five bullet points about a terrible story. It would be nice to see some real discussion. It's unfortunate that many people hate these dogs based solely on the news instead of based on personal experience. I used to be that person until I actually met several pitbull dogs.

Hi Maya- I hopped back on this thread for one purpose- you and others on this thread have madeRead More sincere, intelligent comments. But you are ignoring the cardinal rule of the internet: Don't Feed the Trolls. Boss Hogg is a troll. His biased presentation of one sided material, "culled" (pun intended) from a broad, unrelated array of news sources, is classic trolling. Remember: Trolling is not just for the comments! The whole purpose of a blog can be to troll for outrage, and pageviews, as seems to be the case here.

You people all should get a life. By definition none of you who speak out against pit bulls haveRead More any first hand experience with pit bulls let alone owned, or taken care of one. My pit mix is the best, sweetest dog ever. And he was the eighth of seven prior fosters - some good, others great. I know there are bad dogs out there, and pits like any larger dog are powerful. So when they're bad, they're dangerous - but there's nothing unique to the breed that makes them so. By the way, my cocker spaniel/beagle mix is crazy and dangerous.

I lived on base while in the U.S.N. for many years and dog attacks in general were very rare. TheRead More reason? Because you could get in big trouble if your dog bit someone, like loss of rank, fined, extra duty, or kicked out of the military. The military has banned Pit Bulls on bases because they have a bad track record in the civilian world and an insurance risk.
tribble April 11, 2014 at 05:12 pm
Paul, do you follow military news? Have you seen the new navy missiles and the new stealth warship?
anon April 11, 2014 at 05:28 pm
#Paul, you bring up a great point there - that there are hefty repercussions for any dog attacks andRead More it forces people to be responsible owners and actually handle their dogs properly. The same cannot be said with the general public. Sometimes the owners may get a fine, but some don't even bother registering, fixing, or getting rabies shots. The fines for that are very minimal. I think your answer poses a big question - shouldn't we have more in place that reprimands the owners? In some states, an owner that abuses or neglects a dog can still own a dog if they choose.

The term pit bull is a generic term used to describe dogs with similar physicalRead More characteristics. Usually a "pit bull" is considered one of several breeds including the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, or any mix thereof. In some parts of the world, the American Bulldog and Dogo Argentino are also classified as a "Pit Bull-type" dog, despite major genetic differences. Any dog that is mixed with a "bully breed"[citation needed] may also be called a "pit bull" including those that are descended from the English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Boston Terrierand Cane Corso.[2] The pit bull is not a distinct breed which may make it difficult for experts to identify,[3][4][5] and while mixed breed dogs are often labelled a "pit bull" if they have certain physical characteristics such as a square shaped head or bulky body type,[2] visual identification of mixed breed dogs is not recommended by the scholarly community.[3] So read and really think about it 6% come on the number is way higher than that for population.

I too would like to know what this Boss Hogg person's agenda is. What personal experience do youRead More have in animal rescue? It's apparent to me that they don't even know much about dogs in general. Do you have dogs? Are you aware of how many perfectly adoptable dogs are euthanized every day in America? Are you aware of how disregarded and abused dogs are in certain parts of the country? Are you aware of the dilemma of backyard breeding and inbreeding and how this contributes to the problem of aggressive dogs? What's your story, Boss Hogg? What do you *know* about dogs and rescue besides what you've googled on the internet to support your implied bias?
Gary Ortiz April 11, 2014 at 06:30 am
Again, I have owned pitbulls ever since I got bitten by one. My American bully has done extensiveRead More and Expensive training, If an owner isn't willing to put the time and effort into training and maintained training the dog, these breeds of dog revert to what they know. I didn't get my dog so I can have the Tough guy image, or so that people will be intimidated by me walking( that already happens). I got my dog and constantly(everyday) do some type of training with her because I respect the power they have. I've had children run up to pet her and she'll sit and allow them to pet her. I have socializeed her with every type of dogs, from show poodles to rotties, and because of all the training she has not once shown any type of aggression towards anyone or any animal. Most of the time she sit in front of me when someone comes up as to say she's waitning for me to say it's OK. or good girl. This blog is nothing more than a few google experts looking up stats, and facts. She is my protector and i am hers. So if you never owned a pit, then you can't really pass jugdement on those "idiots" or "pidiots" that do. I live in the area and anytime, anyone would like to see how a pit should act leet me know. It might just change your mind.Don't believe everyhting you hear or read about them and don't be scared, they might one day save your life.
