Sibling Scouts Honored in Jefferson

Connor and Darianne Mastricola rose to the top of their respective scouts ranks.

For the first time in township history, a brother and sister were presented with the highest scouts honors.

Connor and Darianne Mastricola were awarded at Wednesday's council meeting Eagle Scout and Gold Award, respectively, for their work with the boy and girl scouts.

"Connor is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 49, Jefferson Township, Morris County, New Jersey," said Council President Richard Yocum. "As an Eagle Scout he is known and respected for leadership, civic commitment, patriotism and demonstration of citizenship. Connor’s commitment to steadily progress through the ranks to achieve this celebrated award demonstrates his determination to prepare himself for a meaningful and productive role of society."

Mastricola's project to become an Eagle Scout, a rank only four percent of boy scouts ever achieve, was he built an outdoor classroom.

"The courtyard that I did it in was originally the smoker's lounge, when smoking was allowed in high school," Connor Mastricola said. "I repaved the macadam, built four picnic benches and put two gardens in, so it was a big improvement to what it was."

Darianne Mastricola is a member of Girl Scout Troop 1890 and completed her Gold Award project last fall.

"I did a breast cancer awareness walk, right here by the gazebo," Darianne Mastricola said. "I did it on a whole bunch of different illnesses and sicknesses to women's health. What we did is we walked a mile and then everybody got their own t-shirt that they ordered before and a breast cancer bag with all different information, and the breast cancer survivors were optional to get a different colored t-shirt that kind of separated them."

Yocum said the governing body was recognizing Darianne for her exemplary performance.

"Only six percent of girl scouts attain this coveted honor," said Yocum. "It is with much pride and pleasure that we congratulate Darianne on her dedication, hard work and perseverance in achieving this honor, and we salute her as one of scouting's finest young citizens."
