Garden Plots for Purchase Available for Fall Harvest

Novice and master gardeners invited to plant organic produce.

You don't have to have a farm to be a farmer.

The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is offering plots for purchase to novice and master gardeners so that they can plant fall harvest crops. The 10 by 10 plots available cost $30 for non-Mount Olive residents and $40 for non-Land Conservancy of New Jersey members.

"A number of crops are very successful when planted in the late summer and fall. These include leafy vegetables such as spinach, bok choy, red kale, and lettuce," the Land Conservancy said in a press release. "Additionally peas, beets, turnips, radishes, and several types of beans can be planted from seeds by early August and need only 60 days to mature."

The garden sits on a .25-acre piece of land on the westbound side of Wolfe Road, near the intersection of Route 46 on the South Branch Preserve. The land was purchased by the Land Conservancy of New Jersey and partners to protect headwaters of the Raritan River.

To protect the crops from deer and rodents, fencing surrounds the garden. A shed is also available on the site. Water is provided by spigots and hoses throughout the garden and gardeners are encouraged to bring their own gardening tools.
