New Center Offers Insight & Solutions on Aging Issues

Resource center located in Succasunna promises help for caregivers & loved ones.

The dilemmas related to aging can be perplexing: How do you communicate with your parents about aging issues? Is a reverse mortgage a good idea for a senior? Should an aging parent move in with his or her adult child? If your spouse is developing Alzheimer’s disease, what can you do?

To offer assistance to caregivers and their senior family members, the Senior Solutions Center opened in mid-October, located at 109 Main St., in Succasunna.

“We want to be a local, one-stop resource center to help area families and their senior loved ones understand the changing face of aging," said Andrea Sussman, who holds a master’s degree in social work and is owner of the local Home Instead Senior Care office at the same location.

“Many times family caregivers don’t know where to look for answers to these kinds of questions,” said Sussman,

The center, which will be operated by Sussman and her staff, will be free and open to the public each weekday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment.

Featured will be a resource library of print and Web-based materials on topics such as communicating with older adults and siblings, senior nutrition and exercise, intergenerational living, coping with Alzheimer’s disease, and how to prepare for a senior emergency. Local resources from organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association also will be available.

Sussman, whose Home Instead Senior Care office serves Morris County seniors by providing non-medical, at-home care and companionship services, hopes to give back to the community through the Senior Solutions Center.

Sussman and her staff also offer free Family Caregiver Education training on a variety of aging-related topics through the Caregiver Coalition of Morris County at the local United Way office.
