CCM Professor Presented with Community Service Award

Honored by Morristown Neighborhood House for decades of service to children and others.

Dr. Dorothy Hollowell of Morristown, professor of English at County College of Morris (CCM), recently was presented with the Community Service Award from the Morristown Neighborhood House for her many years of service to improve the lives of children and the community.

One of her first community service projects nearly three decades ago was the establishment of the Homework Center at the Neighborhood House. The center, which continues today, helps to ensure that students in the Neighborhood House after-school program are able to complete their homework before being picked up by their parents. Also at the Neighborhood House, she led the establishment of the first Books and Game Center for youth.

Hollowell’s other community service includes arranging a youth choir performance with jazz legend Dave Brubeck several years ago and serving on the board of directors for the Morris Educational Foundation and as a volunteer at Calvary Baptist Church working on behalf of area youth. She currently serves as a tutor for CCM students as well as those in the Morristown community.

"If we do not invest our time and energy into our communities, they will not be the neighborhoods we want them to be,” noted Hollowell. “There are benefits to giving and sharing and I also believe that to whom much is given much is expected.”

At CCM, her involvement also has been extensive and includes service as facilitator of the Mississippi Burning and Diversity Film Series, coordinator of EOF graduates and as a member of the Sustainability and Bildner Grant committees. She has been voted Teacher of the Year several times and was named U.S. Educator of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Hollowell joined the CCM faculty in 1988. She earned her Ph.D. from Tufts University, her M.A. from Atlanta University and her B.A. from Le Moyne College, after taking part in educational programs at Harvard and Yale universities.
