Board of Ed Loses Third Member in a Year

 Two Jefferson Township Board of Education members have resigned in the past six months, Judy Castiglione on Tuesday night and approximately the same amount of time that Joseph Kraemer has been superintendent of schools.

Nick Anzano also resigned last August while Kathaleen Fuchs was still superintendent, citing "overwhelming work commitments."

 Lake Hopatcong residents won’t have to travel as far to satisfy that 3 a.m. ice cream craving once the new Quick Chek on Route 15 opens on Oct. 16. And with the new store comes a new traffic light at the intersection of Route 15 North and Bowling Green Parkway, funded entirely by Quick Chek. Several residents are happy to see the addition of that traffic light.

Lake Drawdowns Under Consideration

Drawdowns of Lake Hopatcong—both the annual 26-inch and the five-year 60-inch—weighed heavily on the minds of attendees of the Lake Hopatcong Commission meeting on Monday night. There were mixed opinions among the attendees, and an assurance from the commission that no final decision has been made as of yet.

Available parking spaces in the Jefferson Township High School lot declined from 202 in 2011 to 190 this year, while the senior class rose in numbers from 268 in 2011 to 284 this year, causing issues with campus parking, according to Joseph Kraemer, superintendent of schools.

Now you can find out exactly how many calories those treats will cost you, since the Lake Hopatcong and Oak Ridge McDonald’s, along with stores across the country, are posting calorie counts of all menu items in restaurants and at drive-thru windows.

No Moment of Silence for 9/11 Questioned

 While the anniversary of Sept. 11 was addressed academically at the high school last week, a moment of silence was not observed. That had some parents and students wondering why, and resulted in a promise from the school board that the moment of silence will be reinstituted next year.

An alleged stalker had a knife when he followed a 47-year-old township woman to the police station when she tried to report him on Sept. 10, Jefferson Township Police said.

Cody Evans, 21, of West Milford, was charged with stalking, resisting arrest and possession of a knife.

  according to Jefferson Township Board of Education business administrator Dora Zeno, a sentiment confirmed by township business administrator James Leach.

Citizens of the Year Honored at Meeting

 When the announcements of citizens of the year came at Jefferson Day back in July, Eileen Grady was eating funnel cake and John Focacci wasn’t paying attention. Both wound up being Jefferson Township Mayor Russell Felter’s picks for citizens of the year, and both said they couldn’t have been more surprised. And both were honored with a proclamation at Wednesday night’s township council meeting.

Deceased Jefferson Native Remembered at Memorial

 Brooke Hardy was remembered as a fair and honest man, a true friend to Jefferson Township, a Yankee hater and a thespian, among other things.
