Sandy Aftermath: A Look Back on the Week

A look at some of the top stories from the week that Hurricane Sandy caused devastation to thousands of residents, destroying homes and knocking out power in Jefferson.

Monday


  • Mayor Russell Felter declared a state of emergency Monday night during Hurricane Sandy, and urged all residents to stay off the roads.

Tuesday


  • Police said Bruce Latteri was killed in his Nicole Court home early Tuesday morning when a tree smashed into his house during Hurricane Sandy.

  • The day after Hurrciane Sandy, Mayor Felter said the state of emergency was still in effect, and made a mandtaory curfew from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning for all residents.

Wednesday

  • Warming and Charging Stations Open Wednesday Morning
    Police opened two centers around the township for residents to warm up, grab a snack, or charge their phones.
  • Christie Moves Halloween to Monday
    Gov. Chris Christie issued an executive order declaring that no New Jersey town can hold trick-or-treating on Wednesday. If towns had planned to do so, they must move trick-or-treating and any public celebrations to Monday.

Thursday

  • NJEA Cancels Atlantic City Convention
    The annual New Jersey teachers convention in Atlantic City was cancelled for the first time in 158 due to the .damage left behind by Sandy

  • Restaurant on Route 15 survived Sandy, and never lost power.

Friday

  • Gas Rationing Begins Saturday in 12 Counties
    Governor Christie issued an order for plates ending in an even number can fill up gas on even numbered days of the month, while plates ending in an odd number can fill up on odd numbered days of the month.
  • Sandy Alters Polling Locations
    Five original voting locations were condensed ino three due to power loss from Tropical Storm Sandy.
