Stanlick School Teachers to Make Strides Against Breast Cancer

A group of Jefferson Township educators are walking 5K in Parsippany to honor those afflicted with the disease—and to help fund research for a cure.

For the second year in a row, a team representing Jefferson Township's Stanlick School will take part in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Parsippany.

Teachers will walk wearing matching T-shirts donated by township resident Bill Wilson in memory of the beloved wife he lost to the disease.

"We sold the shirts for a few dollars and are donating the money in Mrs. Wilson's memory," said teacher Lisa Young. "We also held a dress-down day [to raise money for the cause] in addition to private donations."

Young said the effort started during last year's districtwide dress-down day, which traditionally is a campaign to collect money to fight breast cancer. Teachers decided to use any cash raised to support the Making Strides effort and to participate in the walk.

The American Cancer Society's Northwest New Jersey region hosts the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K at the Mack-Cali Business Campus in Parsippany each year. In 2012, the event raised approximately $790,000 for breast cancer research and services, Parsippany Patch reported. The fundraiser last year boasted more than 11,000 walkers, many who stepped out as members of teams.

"Our team is called the Stanlick Strollers," Young said. "We all have someone in our lives who has been afflicted by this terrible disease, and our walk enables us to do something to aid in the research to eradicate it. It is our tiny part, but it's working.

"I have friends and loved ones who I am happy to say are survivors because of the research being done, she continued, noting that the group has to this point raised $600 of its $2,500 goal for the 2013 effort ($450 of it is represented on the team's Making Strides page). "So we walk for those who are survivors, for those who we remember and for those who will hopefully never know a cancer like this existed."

She gave special kudos to Wilson, whose "generosity really touched us."

"We are now happy to walk in the memory of his wife as well."

If you'd like to join the Stanlick Strollers in striding against breast cancer, you can do so online. Donating to the teachers' effort can be accomplished on the Web as well.
