Garage Fire Prompts Police Investigation

Fire that caused $250K worth of damage does not appear suspicious, police said.

Jefferson Township police are investigating the cause of a garage catching fire on Highland Road Sunday.

According to Capt. Eric Wilsusen, police responded to the home to find flames and smoke coming from the garage. The owner of the home had told officers that he returned home and opened the garage to find fire inside.

Jefferson Fire Department Co. 1 and Co. 2, the MFAS and the West Milford Fire Department responded to the scene and put out the fire.

No injuries were reported, but a car parked in the driveway sustained damage from the flames and water, Wilsusen said. The estimated value of the damage is $250,000.

While the fire is still under investigation by Det. Steve Muller, Wilsusen said the cause does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
