Jefferson Police to Conduct Cell Phone Checks

Police want to make motorists aware of cell phone laws.

Hang up the phone when you're driving, because the Jefferson Township Police Department will be conducting cell phone enforcement details on Tuesday, May 31 and Monday, June 6.

Cell phone use while driving has become the number one cause of distracted driving and driving while texting has been compared to driving while intoxicated, according to police. Regardless of the law many drivers regularly drive while texting and talking on their cell phone.

New Jersey cell phone law allows for drivers to utilize a hands-free device, yet many drivers can be found operating their vehicles without a hands-free device while using their cell phones.

The fine for the violation is $130. Most hands free devices can be purchased for less than the fine.

The main purpose of the detail is to bring awareness of the law and to ensure the safety of the other drivers and the many other people who utilize roadways, such as pedestrians and bicyclists, police said.
