Jefferson Police Warn of Phone Scam

Caller claiming to work for JCP&L tried to scam a Route 15 merchant of $500, police said.

Jefferson Police are warning community members of a widespread phone scam.

A Route 15 business reported earlier this month of receiving a phone call from what he believed to be a JCP&L representative, Capt. Eric Wilsusen said.

The caller advised the merchant that he failed to pay last month's electric bill and he needed to immediately pay the utility company $500, Wilsusen said.

The caller told the merchant to purchase a $500 Green Dot Money Pak at Walgreens, Wilsusen said.

"Residents should be aware this is a scam and should contact JCP&L directly if you receive such a phone call," Wilsusen said.
