Snowstorm Causes Accidents, Dangerous Conditions

Jefferson Police Sgt. Robert Bush advises motorists to stay off the slippery roads Wednesday night, as the winter storm caused hazardous driving conditions throughout the township.

"The schools are closed and a lot of people are off work, so the best thing to do is stay home," he said. "There's no reason to be out there if you don't need to be."

As of 5:30 p.m., Bush said there were three motor vehicle accidents, all involving two cars colliding at a stop sign or while making a turn.

The accidents occurred in both parts of the township, on Legion Road, Espanong Road, and Route 15, Bush said. He said all incidents were minor and no injuries were reported.

Bush said the only road that was closed was East Shawnee Trail around 5 p.m. because of a truck blocking the roadway, but said it should be open later in the evening. He said all other roads remained open.

Bush said the plows have been out all day Wednesday, first helping with icy conditions in the morning, and then plowing the roads beginning around 2 p.m. when the snow began to fall.

The storm, which progressed from Southern Pennsylvania to New Jersey, is expected to last until Thursday morning with wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour.

The storm may also bring up to a quarter-inch of ice, according to National Weather Service meteorologist David Stark.
