Two Dead in Rockaway Twp. House Fire

Blaze appears to be not suspicious, but cause remains under investigation.

A mother and her teenage son were killed in an early-morning fire Friday in Rockaway Township.

The cause of the fire that tore through the Green Pond Road home remains under investigation, according to a statement released by Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp.

The prosecutor's office declined to provide the identities of the victims, but witnesses and relatives on the scene confirmed a mother and her 17-year-old son were killed in the blaze, according to the Daily Record.

A third person was transported to Saint Clare's Hospital for injuries sustained in the fire, which broke out at about 6 a.m., the prosecutor's office said. The extent of the person's injuries was not immediately known.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious, but the cause remains under investigation, the prosecutor's office said.

The Rockaway Township Fire Department, Rockaway Township Police Department, Rockaway Borough Fire Department, Picatinny Arsenal Fire Department, Saint Clare's Emergency Medical Services, Morris County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Section and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office Arson Unit responded to the scene.
