Sandy Make-Up Days to be Decided on Monday

Jefferson school officials are exploring several options for how to make up the lost school days from Superstorm Sandy's aftermath.

This year there were five snow days built into the school calendar, but the storm used eight, so the school needs to find a solution to make up three days, according Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent Mary Judge.

District Superintendent Joseph Kraemer said he's met with the administration, the PTA, BOE committee and various school organizations to figure out the best solution.

He said he will come up with a recommendation this week, and the board will vote at the next BOE meeting Monday night for where to add the missed time.

"With the impending winter we're exploring some options to front load a little bit to ensure that we don't have to go until the end of June," Kraemer said.

He said some possiblities are taking off days from spring break and 3-day weekend holidays. Adding days at the end of June is also a possiblity, but Kraemer said he'd rather go with the other options instead.

"The problem then was that we had to get the sewer plant up and running at the high school," Mayor Russell Felter said earlier this week. "We had to get the water tested, had to stock it with food, there were a bunch of things that had to happen."

Kraemer said the first week back in school since the storm has seemed normal, despite the conditions the students and staff had just been faced with.

"It's been quiet, and that's a good thing," Kraemer said. "Kids are glad to be back, they're just thrilled. After no power, no TV, coming back to school was a nice thing."
