Girls State

Nicole Martinelli

The New Jersey Boys State and New Jersey Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary for high school students between their junior and senior years. In both programs, a mythical fifty-first state is organized and administered for citizenship training purposes under the auspices of The American Legion, Department of New Jersey. A session of New Jersey Boys State has been held annually since the first session in 1946.

Boys State and Girls State have a strong tradition of education, patriotism and excellence in the development of tomorrow's leaders at a weeklong hands-on program. As one of hundreds of delegates around the state for each program, each student will learn about various aspects of the political process including: the political units of government and their function; the branches of government and their jurisdictions, and the functions of political parties and their role in the political process.
