Reporting Mistake May Have Led to Lower Jefferson H.S. Ranking

The current rank stands at 211, but could be changed.

While fell from 158 to 211 in NJ Monthly magazine’s annual rankings, school superintendent Joseph Kraemer said there was a legitimate mistake in the reporting, and he is working with the magazine’s editors to get the problem corrected.

“We are listed as having an average class size of 49.1 students, which is incorrect,” Kraemer said. “It should be listed as 23.7. I am working with the editors of New Jersey Monthly to get the correct information.”

Eric Levin of NJ Monthly related that the magazine received incorrect information from Jefferson Township when gathering data for the report.

“The information we received from Jefferson had the 49.1 number in it,” Levin said.

However, information provided on NJ Monthly’s website explained that the information for the report was obtained from the 2010-2011 school report card from the New Jersey Department of Education. The 23.7 figure comes from the that report card.

"The error occurred because the vendor for the Department of Education school report card didn't use the June student information upload we provided," Kraemer said.

Both Kraemer and Levin said that the magazine has provided corrected information to Leflein Associates, the research company that analyzed the data. The company will provided a corrected ranking for Jefferson Township High School by Thursday or Friday. Patch will have the updated result as soon as it becomes available.
