Sandy Make-Up Days Will Be Delayed Openings

Students will have half days on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day.

The two added days in the district's schedule from the lost school days from Superstorm Sandy will be delayed openings, school officials said at the BOE meeting Monday night.

Students will have shortened days on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and President Day. The third day that students will go to school for make-up on Friday, April 5, will be a full instructional day.

Board member Cynthia Scott said that the two days were decided to be delayed openings instead of early dismissals because of the mandated training teachers need to participate in the morning. She also said an early dismissal would have given students a 2-hour time gap before afterschool activities.

All kindergarten classes will have normal schedules. The delayed openings impact the 1st through 12th graders.

The storm caused schools to close for eight days. The district already had five extra days built into the school calendar to use for snow days, so the district only had to make up three. If snow days are needed, spring break will be used for make-up.
