Learn a Lesson 'About Boating Safety'

The U.S. Coast Guard's weekend offering can help keep Lake Hopatcong and its visitors safe.

Many Jefferson residents love living near water, and with that in mind, the township wants to ensure that those who operate watercraft on Lake Hopatcong do so safely.

This Saturday, that desire becomes real. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 67 offers the course “About Boating Safely” at the Hopatcong Civic Center, 32 Lakeside Blvd.

The day-long class will teach residents the basics of handling boats and the rules for operating vessels safely and within the constraints of state law. Upon successful completion of the course, which includes an exam, the students will be entitled to receive a New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate, which is now required to operate a powerboat within the Garden State.

The class runs Saturday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $65, which includes lunch.
