On Stage: Summer Songs Begin to Fill the Air

Area stages offer plenty of concerts, along with a few plays and musicals.

Music lovers are in luck the next few weeks, as venues across the area will be presenting concerts by some big-name artists. Classic-rock fans won't want to miss Jefferson Starship in Newton or the Steve Miller Band at the Mayo Center. If you want to relive the '80s, then Howard Jones' concert at the Mayo Center is for you. And the Newton Theatre will also be hosting a true Jersey legend when Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes perform there. You can even see a Klezmer concert at the Bickford Theatre. There are also plenty of shows finishing up their runs, such as "Henry IV, Part One" at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, "The Music Man" at the Villagers and "Our Town" at Somerset Valley Players. And performers have plenty of options…

Say 'I Do! I Do!' to a Show Near You

It's a time of transitions as some theaters are wrapping up their season, while others are just getting started

The show written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt (who also wrote "The Fantasticks") explores a long marriage through song and laughter. Meanwhile, Chester Theatre Group is preparing for its last show of the season by holding auditions for "Xanadu." Performers can also try out for parts in "Alice in Wonderland" at Brundage Park Playhouse and Trilogy Repertory Company's 2012 Plays in the Park summer season. Speaking of summer, as some groups end their seasons, others are just getting started. And if you want to be part of The …

Jim Breuer: I Marked Road Trips by Metal Albums

The SNL alum and Morris County resident performs Aug. 27 at The Community Theatre.

For many, road trips tend to be measured in hours, or perhaps the number of states driven through. For comedian Jim Breuer, many were measured by the heavy metal albums he listened to on the way. In his 2010 book I'm Not High (But I've Got a Lot of Crazy Stories about Life as a Goat Boy, a Dad, and a Spiritual Warrior), he notes a trip to Washington, D.C., was measured "in two [Queensryche] Operation: Mindcrimes' and one [Metallica] ... And Justice For All." "I was a huge Queensryche fan," Breuer said, noting his disappointment he was unable to see them perform locally at The Community Theatre on Aug. 3, because he was going to be performing in Germany. "Operation: Mindcrime, I listened to it 10,000 times," he said. The Long Island native …

Jim Breuer is not only a very funny comedian, but he also the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He was always willing to donate his time to helping others. He gave my wife and I tickets to see him at the Nokia Theater in Times square, and we had a great time. Thanks Jim-Andy & Allison Diamond   more ›
