New Cops, Rescue Squad Members To Be Sworn In

Jefferson Council meeting to be preceded by budget discussion.

The Jefferson Township Council has a varied agenda set for its Wednesday, Feb. 27 meeting, with the swearing in of new police and rescue squad members. The Mayor and Council will introduce and swear in William Carroll and Timothy Hecht as the township’s newest police officers, and residents Christina Gracia and Sal Jensen as its newest Rescue Squad members. The governing body will also have a proclamation and resolution for the town’s newest Eagle Scout, Michael Thomas Staples. Prior to the regular meeting, the group will discuss the communications and technology portion of the municipal budget, as well as going through line items for the recreation department, the agenda states. Jefferson Rescue Squad Needs Your Help

CPR training fundraiser is coming in March and the squad wants residents to participate.

Next month, the Jefferson Rescue Squad will be in a rare position of role reversal as the first responders who are always out to help the residents of the township are looking for township to aid them. On March 23 the squad will bw\e hosting a CPR training which, according to Vice-President Erin Schmitt, will be used as a fundraiser. The Jefferson Rescue Squad is 50 members strong and operates three ambulances in the township. The are a 100 percent volunteer organization that depends on the community as a primary financial source. The CPR day training not only benefits the squad, which benefits the residents, but provides life saving skills to those in attendance. The CPR training course was designed to help the residents learn an important skill needed in an emergency. It will also help the First Aid Squad with keeping their equipment and personnel up to date. This is a great program for all residents and hopefully everyone will come out and support a great organization as well as learn a valuable tool in life saving.   more ›

Two Boats, Car Damaged in Lake Hopatcong Marine Fire

No injuries in apparent electrical blaze not believed to be suspicious.

A small wooden storage building at Lake Hopatcong Marine on Howard Boulevard was engulfed in flames early on Sunday morning, according to Jefferson Township police. Officer Chris Quidort responded to the fire, in which two boats and a vehicle that were located near the shed were damaged. Det. Rich Geib also responded to investigate the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation. However, the fire is believed to be electrical in nature, and nothing appears to be suspicious, police said. This is the second fire at the site in just over five months. The last one started at Screen Printing USA, in the same complex but not the same building as Lake Hopatcong Marine, in March. That fire was not deemed suspicious either, but electrical…

Cops: Nobody Hurt in Marina Fire

Blaze extinguished quickly; no boats damaged, police said.

A fire at Screen Printing USA on Howard Blvd. was extinguished within 30 minutes, according to Jefferson police. The fire started inside the business housed at the Lake Hopatcong Marina on Friday afternoon. Jefferson Township Fire Company No. 2, Jefferson Rescue Squad, the Mount Arlington Fire Department and Mount Arlington Rescue Squad were on the scene. “We have no idea yet how it started, but they knocked it down very quickly,” said Captain Eric Wilsusen of the Jefferson Township Police. “No boats were on fire. They were able to be moved out in time.” No one was injured in the fire, Wilsusen added. Jefferson Township Police Detective Rich Geib is investigating.
