Apparently the students at Jefferson Township Middle School do, because Friday was Falcon Fun Day at the school, in conjunction with the kick-off of Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS). The PBSIS program is part of a national program called Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS). The state program is run in conjunction with the University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ) and the Office of Special Education, part of the New Jersey Department of Education. Seventh-Grade Workload Too 'Difficult,' Board Member Says

Judy Castiglione believes there's a 'huge difference in expectations between sixth and seventh grade.'

With the new year to start on Wednesday, transitioning from one school to the next will be on the minds of many parents. It’s been on the minds of several Board of Education members too, most notably Judy Castiglione, who has asked the board’s education committee to look into her biggest concern, the transition between sixth and seventh grade at Jefferson Township Middle School. She appeared to be upset with the response she got to her concerns at a recent board meeting. “When students come into sixth grade, they are treated with kid gloves and taken very good care of,” Castiglione said. “But when they get to seventh grade, things are much more difficult. There seems to be a huge difference in expectations between sixth and seventh grade, …

JTMS Science Teacher Goes Green at Summer Clinic

Claude Larson learns about sustainable energy.

While science is her specialty, it was writing that went a long way toward making Jefferson Township Middle School science teacher Claude Larson a Simmons Scholar. Larson applied for a grant to attend a sustainable energy institute through the generosity of Maitland P. Simmons. He left a million-dollar grant to the New Jersey Science Teachers’ Association, enabling teachers to attend the institute. “I was lucky enough to be selected, and I believe the essays that I had to write as part of my application were weighted very heavily in the decision-making process,” she said. “They wanted to know our motivation for attending the institute. What were we going to do with all this information once we received it?” Larson said she learned so much…

Industrial Wind Turbines require that fossil fuel plants work in tandem with them. Many days, especially in summer days at peak demand, there is not enough wind to run them. Fossil fuel plants provide over 100% backup at those times, as IWTs require grid power for their own systems. When wind is moving the blades, wind speed and direction constantly vary. and conventional plants have to ramp up …   more ›
