For 67 years, the Lake Hopatcong based Knee Deep Club has held its Junior Derby day and 2013 was no exception. Gathering at Memorial Pond in Mt. Arlington last weekend, those in attendance all left with the biggest catch of the day: priceless memories. Two straight days of heavy rain that soaked the region came to an abrupt end just before the start of this greatly anticipated event, but it still made the gathering of all the equipment; from grills, tables & chairs, rods, reels & bait, food and drinks, ice, prizes and grab bag gifts was made a lot more difficult for the Knee Deep volunteers. An ice-fishing contest on Lake Hopatcong scheduled for Jan. 20 has been cancelled due to lack of ice on the lake, according to AIM Jefferson. The contest was to be the first of the year hosted by the Knee Deep Club. The club had been planning for the event for months and sent out notice earlier this month. Ice-fishing contests by the club have drawn a good amount of participation, including last year's February contest in which 85 anglers fished. First-, second- and third-place winners split a $1,360 cash prize.

Team, residents work to keep Lake Hopatcong one of the state's top summer boating attractions.
This year the Knee Deep Club is moving to transition our WATER SCOUTS Project, where we’ve been working to ensure that Lake Hopatcong does not get impacted by the Water Chestnut plant that is wreaking havoc on water bodies across the state, into a more sustainable model. Before we explain the changes to our program, here’s a little history for any reader who was not aware of our efforts. In 2009 we became aware of a serious problem downstream at Lake Musconetcong where a significant portion of the lake’s surface had been completely covered by a non native aquatic plant called Water Chestnut (trapa natans). This is not the plant that is used in oriental cuisine. When this plant enters a water body it has explosive growth, depletes …
