Weed Removal Efforts Could Be Shared Between Local Lakes

Lake Hopatcong Commission took straw poll, majority agreeing to lease weed harvester to Lake Musconetcong.

The Lake Hopatcong Commission is considering sharing one of its weed harvesters with a neighboring lake, according to AIM Jefferson.

The Commission met this month and took a straw poll, the majority agreeing to lease the harvester to the Lake Musconetcong Regional Planning Board upon changes to the agreement between the two lake associations, the newspaper reported.

Harvesters are used on Lake Hopatcong, which borders Jefferson and Hopatcong, to remove floating and submerged weeds that attract water pests. Lake Musconetcong is in the Hopatcong State Park and borders parts of Morris County and Sussex County.

Jefferson Mayor Russell Felter, who serves as the chairman of the Lake Hopatcong Commission, told the commission that the harvester that will be leased would not have been used on Lake Hopatcong this year, AIM Jefferson reported, as larger harvesters will be used by state employees with the Department of Environmental Protection.
