Funeral Services Held for Family Killed in Route 15 Crash

Luis Torres remains jailed on charges of manslaughter, assault by auto.

Funeral services were held Monday and Tuesday for two of the victims of a fatal Jefferson crash on Route 15 last week, according to The Star-Ledger.

A relative of the victims, Luis Torres, was charged with three counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, three counts of second-degree vehicular homicide and five counts of fourth-degree assault by auto as authorities said he was drunk when he drove the SUV carrying nine people, including them, and crashed. Two adults, an 11-year-old and unborn baby were killed as a result of the crash.

Torres, 37, of Jersey City, allegedly told authorities he had been drinking that day and was "probably twice the legal limit" when he got behind the wheel to drive the 2002 Ford Explorer. He was sent to the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of $750,000 bail.

The 11-year-old, Tevia Booth, Torres' stepdaughter, was memorialized Monday at Ocean Avenue Baptist Church in Jersey City, with a funeral Tuesday, the Ledger reported. Also killed in the crash were Torres' mother-in-law, Lucila Colon, and another relative Julissa Colon, who was pregnant.

Lucila Colon's funeral was held Monday morning at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Jersey City, with burial at Bayview-New York Bay Cemetery in Jersey City, where the other relatives will also be buried, according to the newspaper.
